What is eFoiling and how does it really work when you’re out on the water?

Don’t worry if you’ve never heard of eFoiling because it’s still somewhat new, but its popularity continues to grow rapidly. Opua Adventures can train you on it, show why you’ll have a ball learning to fly on water, and point you to where you can get your own Flite eFoil.

What is an eFoil?

An eFoil is a hydrofoil board, which utilizes electrical power to energize the wing-like structure, guiding the participant across the water almost effortlessly.

Many eFoil boards come with remote control gadgets that let you control how fast they go, often as much as 30 mph. There is somewhat of a learning curve to it since it requires you to balance on the board properly. Some boards come with extra functionality where the user can control directions with foot-guided joysticks, whereas others even include smartphone applications.

The good news is that it’s not hard to eFoil like a pro if you take your time and follow these helpful suggestions.

Begin on Your Stomach
As you might have guessed, eFoiling requires good balance, which means you aren’t going to just “hop” on the board and get going. Especially for novice eFoilers, it’s better to start on your stomach, using your elbows on top of the board to gain stability. Here, you’ll take a few moments to get used to the water, including how the board handles the waves.

Move to Your Knees
Next, pull your knees up to the front of the board, where your elbows were previously. This allows you to take more control of your center of gravity; shifting more weight toward the front.

Take a Stand
Then, there’s the moment of truth where you’ll stand on top of the board (one leg at a time). Beginners may want to keep one knee on the board and remain semi-crouched for a little longer. Once you’re confident, it will be time to pivot that other foot firmly on top of the board, and prepare to start foiling.

Once you have a firm balance, it’s time to engage the eFoil. This involves slowly gaining a feel for the ups and downs of the waves. You’ll feel like you’re going back and forth between leaning forward and coming back down as you negotiate the waves.

Just like with surfing, it’s better for new eFoilers to pursue calmer waters rather than wavy/turbulent sea conditions. Also, never allow a few failures to discourage you. Some beginners may require a couple of hours to become comfortable with things before really eFoiling across the water.
